Canadian Research Targets Chicken Health to Improve Food Safety:

  • One way to make chickens healthier is to boost their immune system by vaccinating them before they hatch. In Professor Shayan Sharif’s lab at Canada’s University of Guelph, scientists are investigating the efficacy of vaccines and vitamins that can be injected through the shell into the amniotic fluid. The injected chickens with better immune systems shall provide a healthier food supply that benefits both farmers and consumers.

High Welfare Pig Producers Should Be Held as Examples:

  • Dr. David Fraser from University of British Columbia suggests that livestock producers who achieve the highest standards of animal welfare need to be held up as the examples for the rest of the industry, and should be rewarded by the government.

The Supply-Demand Gap of pigs in China has increased:

  • Global average meat consumption per person has increased every year. In 2018, global pork consumption has reached 12.3 kg/person. Pork is one of the most common meats on the table, and is the most favorite meat for Chinese consumers. Therefore, China’s pig production, with the largest proportion, is accounted for 56.6% of the total pig production in the world, and is much higher than the United States, European Union and other countries. The price of fresh pork in China continued to rise in 2019. Estimated by linear model, the average pork prices in 2019 and 2020 will reach $18 and $23 RMB/kg, respectively.
  • The price shall rise even higher as the vaccine for African swine fever would not be built in short-term. Moreover, African swine fever has led to severe de-capacity in pig production industry, and the stock of pigs might be at the low level for a long time. The huge demand of pork and low supply of pigs pushed the market price of pork to rise for the following 3-5 years. The increased profits and higher efficiency of pig farming have attracted more farmers to enter the pig production industry.

The Chinese poultry market rose rapidly in 2019:

  • The productions of boiler chicken and laying hens along with fresh egg consumption in China are the highest in the world. Compared with 2018, the price of whole chicken and the price of egg in China have increased significantly. The development of Chinese poultry production industry has reached to a relatively stable state.
